History of OHA

Owls Head Alloy's (OHA) is an aluminum recycling plant with a fascinating and inspiring history that showcases its growth and success in the industry. Founded with a vision to promote sustainable practices, OHA had its ribbon-cutting ceremony in June 2002. From its humble beginnings, the company has come a long way, becoming a leader in aluminum recycling and a beacon of employee ownership.

In September 2002, OHA commenced production with just one furnace and a small team of 20 dedicated employees. The plant's primary focus was to recycle aluminum scrap, promoting eco-friendly practices while contributing to the conservation of natural resources.

Recognizing the potential for growth, OHA made significant strides in expanding its operations. In February 2005, the company achieved a major milestone by adding a second furnace. This expansion allowed them to increase their production capacity and meet the growing demand for recycled aluminum products in the market.

As OHA's reputation for quality and reliability spread, they continued their expansion journey. In May 2010, OHA further expanded its production capabilities with the addition of a third furnace. This move solidified their position as a prominent player in the aluminum recycling industry.

The company's commitment to innovation and continuous improvement was evident throughout its journey. In 2005, OHA embarked on introducing the shredder line, a new way for the company to process aluminum scrap efficiently. Over the years, the shredder underwent upgrades, including the incorporation of an air knife in 2007, and the implementation of the eddy current addition in February 2012. These technological advancements further streamlined their recycling processes and enhanced overall efficiency.

With each passing year, OHA's achievements multiplied, paving the way for more significant milestones. In October 2018, they added a fourth furnace, and in August 2022, a fifth furnace was installed. These expansions were vital in catering to the ever-increasing demand for recycled aluminum and expanding their market reach.

The company's dedication to its employees and their contribution to its success was unwavering. In June 2019, OHA took a momentous step by transitioning into a 100% employee-owned company with the implementation of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). This decision empowered its workforce and motivated them to take greater ownership of the company's performance, further driving growth and prosperity.

Today, Owls Head Alloy's stands tall as a leading aluminum recycling plant with over 150 employees. Their journey from a small plant with just one furnace and 20 employees to a multi-furnace facility, adopting cutting-edge technologies and empowering its diverse and prosperous workforce through employee ownership, is a testament to their dedication and vision.

OHA's inspiring success story serves as a beacon for other companies, showcasing the importance of sustainability, innovation, and valuing employees. As they continue to grow and evolve, Owls Head Alloy's remains committed to its core principles, contributing positively to the environment, and leaving a lasting impact on the aluminum recycling industry.
